Tesco Charity Trust
The Trust was set up on 1 June 1987 to support both national and local community charities, and to add a 20% top up to staff fundraising. It is run by a board of trustees recommended by the main board of Tesco PLC.
In the year ending February 2013, the Tesco Charity Trust made cash grants of over £2 million to local, national and international charities. This figure includes:
- Community Award donations to local community charities totalling almost £700,000;
- Donations to other charities totalling almost £600,000;
- Over £700,000 in 20% top up on staff fundraising our Tesco Charity Partnership with Diabetes UK and other charities.
The Tesco Charity Trust aims to help Tesco support the local communities in which we operate.
- On a local level, to support the needs of employees, customers and communities around our stores;
- On a national level, to support initiatives that address identified need through existing charities’ activities; and
- On an international level, to help our business and supply chain to make a difference in their locations.
Community Awards - CHILDREN’S EDUCATION AND CHILDREN’S WELFARE
Multiple Sclerosis UK- Our donation paid for a Fit Vibe trainer, helping MS sufferers improve their condition by helping their muscles respond to the stimulation, reducing spasm and stiffness.
Community Awards - ELDERLY PEOPLE AND ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
QPR in the Community Trust- Our donation provided young people with Down’s syndrome with the opportunity to receive nutritional education and develop their cooking skills.
Tesco Charity Trust Larger Grants
The Air Ambulance Service- Our £14,400 donation will enable the Charity to provide another stretcher in order to carry out vital transfers for critically ill children and babies.
Pump Aid – Our £25,000 donation will help install water and toilet projects at schools in Malawi. The money also went towards a monitoring system so the charity can make sure installed pumps are working properly and can be repaired if necessary.
Manchester Care & Repair – We gave a £14,000 donation for the charity to provide and install grab rails, stair rails and other safety equipment for 1000 older people who have been identified as ‘in need’.
